My trip to China ended with an eleven-hour flight back to Vancouver. We flew first to Hong Kong and then connected our flight to Vancouver. Excluding the last visit, the previous three were either business type or out of family emergency. So, I should I say that this last visit was a real visit. And it brought me a reversed cultural shock, which I tried to deny but failed.
Shock One – Traffic Chaos
Believe it or not, I was pretty scared when crossing the road. It seems that the traffic signals in the city where I stayed didn’t really mean anything. People crossed the road when the red light was on, and so did the drivers. I had to drag my dear wife and my brave boy whenever we went across the roads. “Do as the Romans do!” I told them. The real question is “What happens when the Romans don’t?” I have no answer to that question.
Taking a taxi was another unique experience to me. I never realized it was so unique until I revisited the city. Here in the city that I lived, the drivers (not only the taxi drivers) were the “bravest” and the most --- drivers that I had ever seen. Almost none gave signals when making left and right turns. Miraculously, I didn’t see traffic accidents while I was there.
Shock Two – Sense of Privacy
I don’t mean to say that there was no privacy in China. But, what I experience in a notary public office made me wonder what privacy really meant to many people there. One day, I went into the office. Seeing people revealing their quite personal stories in front of many others made me uncomfortable… “Do as the Romans do” I told myself. So, I waited patiently and tried to avoid the sound coming from the person in front of the line. Then, I sensed that someone was peering through my shoulder and stared at the paper that I was holding. “Do as the Romans do” I murmured quietly. Moments later, my brother came and we discussed at the corner of the office with the documents open on the desk. Almost immediately, I saw a man was staring at the documents. His staring lasted (about 3 minutes) till I politely reminded him that it was a personal document and … My mouth dropped seeing him exploded at me, reminding me that it was a public place and he started just the desk not the document.
This incident made me remember what I went through when I visit doctors while I was living in the city. Whoever visited doctors knew that doctors questioned their patients in front of all the other patients or listeners. Quite embarrassing sometimes, I should admit, when you have to involuntarily take the intimate information of someone else, which you really don’t want to.
Shock Three – No Title
The city that I stayed is well known for having rivers running across the city. It should be a beautiful Venice if people living along the river knew how to restrain themselves from dumping the rubbish into the river. Constantly, I saw through internet of this-and-that type of regulations and by-laws have been implemented to prevent rivers from the pollution. Well, the reality shows a quite different view. Black colored material floating with sickening smells catches people’s eyes once they go across the bridge or walk along the river. One day from my ritual morning exercise, I reported to my brother-in-law of what I just discovered. “I saw a very neat slogan today,” I told my brother-in-law. “It’s about the way to prevent people from polluting the river,” I said. This is how it said: “Whoever dumps on the river should be cursed to be terminated, three generations included!”

And then she gave up her job because she did not have to earn a living in the company. She could have her meals right at home everyday, and she did not have to pay the rent for the house where she lived. She had thrown all her money away, and became very lazy indeed.

As soon as I finished the distribution I went back home sleeping for a while & waked up at the crack of dawn. I kept the top 10 cards and gave them to my neighbors, classmates and friends as festival gifts who thanked me a lot just for being able to buy a few chickens. The notice on the gate said : "Two chickens for each person only."
Another thing impressed me deeply was, one year, three days before the Spring Festival, I took my 3-years-old younger brother by the hand going to by fireworks. When I saw the dragon like long queue crowded in the shop yard, I arranged my little brother standing by the corner within my sight where was not so crowded waiting for me. I myself rushed into the crowded queue searching familiar faces, just like looking for a needle in a haystack. At last, thanks God! My sight was fixed upon a young guy! I was lucky enough to find a fellow student who studied in the same school with me. Though we never talked with each other before I was sure we met each other in the school yard several times. With this idea flashed across my mind I acted at once. I went up to him patting his shoulder saying : “ Hi! I was here after you, wasn’t I？” watching his eyes with smile. People in the queue looked at me with doubts. My schoolmate replied loudly:“ Yes, correct! You’ll miss if you come one minute later!” On hearing this, they had nothing to speak of. In fact, everybody present knew clearly that, I cut into the queue. Seeing we two young guys who seemed not afraid of fighting for shopping, they gave in. And besides, we made it smoothly, giving the right excuse. In this way, I was ahead of the game, having bought several packs of fireworks and said "Good-Bye!" to my schoolmate whom I’ve been still keeping contacts with for friendship till now. When my little brother see me buy the fireworks so quickly, he was as happy as a lark, walking on air! Hand in hand, we two went back home singing songs, as happy as a clam.
On our way home we passed a foodstuffs shop by the roadside. Catching sight of persimmon pies on shelf, which he had never tasted before, he thought it should be very delicious. He dragged me by one hand and pointed to the persimmon pies with another, murmuring : “ Buy! Buy!” Although I knew that he was still wet behind the ears and had little knowledge about food, he was the apple of my eye. I would like to jump through hoops for him all the time. I bought 10 cakes of persimmon pies and packed up, telling him : “When we are back home, mother will cook porridge with these pies for you.” My little brother was very happy and nodded with thanks, smiling from ear to ear. However, as soon as we arrived at home, I was given new tasks of buying eggs and fishes. And I went out for the shopping immediately. The next day, when I asked mother to make porridge, enabling little brother to enjoy persimmon pies, the persimmon pies were nowhere to be found. I felt rather upset for it seemed that something had happened. At last, when we discovered three cakes of persimmon pie remained in the plate at the corner of the closet, mother, father and I were all eyes. My dear little brother had eyes only for persimmon pies and he was too anxious to wait for the porridge. He had eaten seven cakes of persimmon pies once continuously! As the result, he was badly suffering from stomachache which had to be cured for years afterwards. Even now, he who has become father himself, still feel uncomfortable at his stomach sometimes.

Their spirit is quite moving and deserves our respect.
Next it comes to doctors. A doctor is one of the professions that everyone is so familiar with, right? Through the series, I’ve learned that there is a woman whose experience differs from others’. In her hospital, she often sees infants rejected by their parents at the door. Those poor infants as she said have got cerebral palsy. Despite the strong opposition of her family and friends, she determined to adopt any infant who is rejected by parents. In fact, the doctor herself isn’t rich enough. A lot of neighbors think of her to be mad. But there is a firm belief supporting this woman doctor along the way, and that is “All things in their being are good for something.” She shows special preference for those infants and teaches them to talk. With her love and care, those lucky infants are growing up healthily day by day. She hopes that they can contribute for the society in the future. What a wonderful dream. Hopefully her dream could come true some day.
Last but not the least, from those series I also learned the grass-roots society. Inside myself, a heart is growing, a heart not only beats for myself but cares for others as well. I once volunteered to be an English teacher in a primary school for children of migrant workers. The volunteer work gave me a precious little chance of saying thanks to people like the children’s parents who construct highways and underground, build up modern skyscrapers and make our cities more and more beautiful. Having heard that the kids in the class were extremely naughty, and having known that several English teachers came and went off,cheap Inflatable Games I was determined to take a challenge.
On the way to the classroom, I felt a little nervous. What would they do with me? Would they play tricks on me? Were they like monsters or devils? I breathed deeply and said to myself, “God save me.”

Looking around the classroom, with a pretended smile on my face, I cleared my voice twice to draw their attention. But nobody seemed to take notice of me. I was so angry that my smile froze and disappeared. I paused and stared at the ceiling, wondering whether I should go or stay. Unexpectedly, the noise in the classroom died down. I lowered my head and looked straight. To my great surprise, nearly all the students sat still on their chairs, looking at me attentively. I was a little puzzled. Why did they behave themselves so soon? Were they frightened? I could not wait to make it clear. Anyway, they were quiet. I would take the chance to make myself known to them.
“Hello, I am your new English teacher. My name is Lawrence. Nice to meet you.” I paused, waiting for their response. No reply. Didn’t they understand me? Were they so poor at English that they did not know what I was saying? The classroom was in such a terrible silence that I could hear them breathing. I felt it was useless talking too much to them. What was the most important for me was to break the silence. Instead of introducing myself afterwards, I asked them, “What do you want to know or say?”
“Sir, you are too short.” said a boy who was actually taller than me, followed by a storm of laughter. I was embarrassed as if he had thrown a handful of salt to my scar.
“Sir, you look very young and handsome. How old are you?” asked a pretty girl in a sweet voice. Nearly all the students kept silent at the moment, waiting for me to answer the question. Though it was too personal, I still satisfied their curiosity. “I am in my twenties.” My reply was drowned in their screams,“wow!”
“Sir, are you married?”
“Is your wife beautiful?”------
I was dizzy by their questions which were closely related to my personal affairs. How I wished I had not broken the ice! I felt as if I had fallen into the ice. Meanwhile, I smiled stealthily because what they asked me suggested they had a little interest in me. Eventually the bell rang. The class was over. “My god!” I had a long and deep breath, which made me really relaxed and comfortable.

A Bad Principal Taught Me a Good Lesson

This was my first faculty meeting of the year, as a new teacher my first ever, and this woman was my principal.
Fresh out of college, I had accepted the position of kindergarten teacher at a public school. The principal arrived at the same time. From day one, she made it clear that it was time for some changes. Instructors with seniority were dismissed, and quickly replaced with the new principal's close friends. An elderly teacher with a physical disability was moved upstairs to a new classroom. When she asked if she could return to her former room, the principal replied, "Deal with it." Upset, the staff began to complain, but nothing changed. New and inexperienced, I decided to keep my mouth shut.
Young, vulnerable, and reluctant to stand up for myself, I was the perfect victim. While everyone labored under the tension, by my second year it became a personal battle. She was out to get me. Her first hostile action was to move me, without cause, to a different classroom in a noisy, high-traffic area. When I told her that parents had protested that this environment interfered with the children's learning, she lashed out, "You're staying exactly where you are, and you'd better deal with the parents, because I won't!"
She would yell at me in front of my colleagues. "Can't you do things right?" "You're still a baby wearing diapers." "Come down from the clouds." "You're too much of a dreamer." She never missed an opportunity to humiliate me.
In my third year my classroom was moved once again, this time to a small, depressing storage room without windows or fire escapes. Occasionally the principal would stalk into my classroom, demanding that students "shut up." Sometimes she scribbled notes, occasionally giving me a contemptuous glance. I knew that even though I did my job to the best of my ability, it was never good enough. Although the performance assessments I received were acceptable, she never discussed them with me. She simply grunted "Sign here," thrusting forward the evaluation sheet.
After three years of working in this environment, my health became affected. I experienced bad headaches and grew increasingly depressed. Day after day, I woke up with a knot in my stomach knowing I had to face the "monster."
Then I found a ray of hope. I'd read these words by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, "You're nobody's victim without your permission." I knew that I had to take control of my life and stop blaming my principal. I couldn't control her behavior, but I could control my reactions to it.。
I decided to attend a seminar that emphasized effective communication strategies. There I learned that bullies are usually cowards who act upon their fears and insecurities. I also learned non-confrontational phrases to use in conversation, such as prefacing a statement with "In my opinion."
I planned ahead when I knew I would have to speak one-on-one with the principal. First, I would gauge her mood that day, and if I found her unapproachable, I would write her a note requesting a meeting. And I mustered my courage and contacted my union representative for advice.
She recommended I document everything my boss said and did to me. If she asked to meet with me, I should insist on having a third party present. In addition, the representative provided me with a guidebook listing my legal rights.
A group of teachers and I formed a support group, and we brainstormed ideas on how to handle our boss. Our most successful tactic was to substitute positive, self-supportive thoughts for negative ones, such as "Problems can be seen as challenges as opposed to setbacks," and "Somewhere in this experience is an opportunity for growth." When repeated again and again, these affirmations became believable. We also studied books on the topic of dealing with difficult people, which gave tips such as: Stand up for yourself; stand up straight and make eye contact; and take time to know the person.
I proved one of these maxims true while chatting with my principal about the beautiful performance of the leading dancer in the Nutcracker Suite. Coincidentally, my boss shared my passion for ballet and had seen the same performance. I discovered that she had another side to her, previously hidden. I began to see her with different eyes. We now had something in common, and her abuse slackened.
Little by little, I regained my confidence and started to see changes. My principal began communicating with me without yelling. She began making time to listen to my thoughts and opinions. One day after a classroom observation, she actually complimented my creative writing lesson. Although my principal and I never became friends, by the end of the school year we managed to develop a healthy respect for each other. Two years later, I was given an opportunity to teach at a superior school, one with a supportive and encouraging principal, and I chose to make the change. I do not regret, however, my time at my first school because I came away with a valuable lesson. I learned that I would never again allow myself to be a victim.

A Truly Outstanding Article

The trend in everyday conversation is to use grandiose words. "Outstanding" is new "good," "amazing" is the new "OK," and "huge" is the new "big."

I was in a restaurant in D.C. last weekend and everything I asked was answered in superlatives.
Me: sale Inflatable Tunnel How s the salmon?
Server: Fantastic!
Me: Does it come with rice?
Server: Absolutely!
Would a "good" and a "yes" have been sufficient? Undeniably!
At Starbucks, the smallest coffee you can order is a Tall. Tall would seem to indicate that there was also a short and medium, with Tall being the largest. But at Starbucks, Tall is small. Grande, which is both Italian and Spanish for large, is medium.
Likewise, at your local 7-Eleven you cannot buy a small: Your choices are Big Gulp, Super Gulp and Extremely Big Gulp. OldBananaNavyGap also did away with the small. You cannot buy anything from the chain stores that is really a "small." My father is an average-sized man. He hasn t gained weight (or height, for that matter) for the past 30 years. Ergo, his size remains the same. But in the same amount of time, his T-shirt size has gone from small/medium to medium to large to extra large.
Upon reflection, the reason for all this colossal-speak is clear: We are bored with our fantastic, wonderful lives. We want the next-next thing now. Now!
And we also want others to think that we still care, that we can still be delighted, that we know that everything is just great. Even when deep inside we know it can t be. Everything can t be great. Hence, we live in a world where extreme is ordinary, where radical is quotidian; exceptional is pedestrian. And to not be overly delighted by the mundane is appalling. It s horrific. And, Dude, that s heinous.
I m not scientist, and my methods of proof leave a little to be desired, or a lot to be desired, or an immensity. An to be honest, I guess I d rather live in a world where people were overly excited than depressed.
But listen to the voices around you. Listen to your own voices. There is nothing on the news that is good or bad, only things that are wonderful or devastating. Even the weather is either beautiful or horrible.
Listen the next time when someone asks you something and you agree, because when you could simply say "yes," instead you will say "absolutely" or "without doubt" or "Oh, yeah, unquestionably - absolutely without doubt."
Have people forgotten what it is like to be OK? Simply OK with what they have and who they are?
If everything is outstanding, if everything is the most amazing thing ever, is anything ever amazing at all?

A Good heart to Lean on

When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely crippled and very short, Abominable Snowman for sale and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. I would inwardly squirm at the unwanted attention. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on.
It was difficult to coordinate our steps —— his halting, mine impatient —— and because of that, we didn't say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, "You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you. "
Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work sick, and despite nasty weather. He almost never missed a day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. A matter of pride.
When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, NY, on a child's sleigh to the subway entrance. Once there, he would cling to the handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside again until we met him in Brooklyn' on his way home.
When I think of it now, I marvel at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such indignity and stress. And at how he did it —— without bitterness or complaint .
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a "good heart", and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.

Now that I am older, I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don' t know precisely what a "good heart" is. But I know the times I don’t have one myself.
Unable to engage in many activities, my father still tried to participate in some way. When a local sandlot baseball team found itself |without a manager, he kept it going. He was a knowledgeable baseball fan and often took me to Ebbets Field to see the Brooklyn Dodgers play. He liked to go to dances and parties, where he could have a good time just sitting and watching.
On one memorable occasion a fight broke out at a beach party, with everyone punching and shoving. He wasn't content to sit and watch, but he couldn't stand unaided on the soft sand. In frustration he began to shout, "I' ll fight anyone who will tit down with me!"
Nobody did. But the next day people kidded him by saying it was the first time any fighter was urged to take a dive even before the bout began.
I now know he participated in some things vicariously through me, his only son. When I played ball (poorly), he "played" too. When I joined the Navy he "joined" too. And when I came home on leave, he saw to it that " I visited his office. Introducing me, he was really saying, "This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different." Those words were never said aloud.

You remember shaking the sofa cushions for loose change, so the toothfairy could come and take away your child's first lost tooth. You wished for your child to have all permanent teeth.
All you remember about your child being seven is the carpool schedule. You learned to apply makeup in two minutes and brush your teeth in the rearview mirror because the only time you had to yourself was when you were stopped at red lights. You considered painting your car yellow and posting a "taxi" sign on the lawn next to the garage door. You remember people staring at you, the few times you were out of the car, because you kept flexing your foot and making acceleration noises. You wished for the day your child would learn how to drive.
All you remember about your child being ten is managing the school fund�raisers. You sold wrapping paper for paint, T shirts for new furniture, and magazine subscriptions for shade trees in the school playground. You remember storing a hundred cases of candy bars in the garage to sell so the school band could get new uniforms, and how they melted together on an unseasonably5 warm spring afternoon. You wished your child would grow out of playing an instrument.
All you remember about your child being twelve is sitting in the stands during baseball practice and hoping your child's team would strike out fast because you had more important things to do at home. The coach didn't understand how busy you were. You wished the baseball season would be over soon.
All you remember about your child being fourteen is being asked not to stop the car in front of the school in the morning. You had to drive two blocks further and unlock the doors without coming to a complete stop. You remember not getting to kiss your child goodbye or talking to him in front of his friends. You wished your child would be more mature.

The Grateful Crane

Over his shouider he carrid a sack of wood1, and as it was near evening and it was getting very cold, he hurried on across the snow-coverd fields. Suddenly he saw something black lying in the snow-something that moved and cried. He stopped, and putting down his sack, he went to see what it was. As he got near, the object in the snow cried again, and he could see that it was a crane-a large and beautiful bird with long legs.
When the crane saw Yohyo coming closer, it struggled to rise and he could see that one of its wings was hurt.
“You pour thing!” he cried. “Come2, let me help you. If you stay out here in the snow, you will die.”
The crane stopped struggling and let Yohyo pick it up3. Gently and carefully, he stroked the crane’s feathers, and carrying it under one arm, he set off for home again.
Yohyo was a kind man with a gentle heart and he felt sorry for the beautiful crane4. He looked after it until it was well again, and then he set it free to fly off into the sky.
One night, afew days later, Yohyo heard someone knocking ant the door. When he opened the door, he found a women standing in the snow. By the light of his lamp, Yohyo could see that she was young and beautiful, and shaking with cold. Yohyo stared at her in surprise.
“I have lost my way in the snow,” she said, in a sweet and gentle voice. “My I come into your house and stay for the night?”
“Yes, yes, of course! Come in at once, out of the snow,” cried Yohyo.
He build up the fire again with fresh wood, and brought the young woman rice an hot soup. Her name was Otsu and she was as king and gentle as Yohyo homself.
The next day there was a storm and so Otsu stayed on at the house and Yohyo grew to love her. Otsu, also, loved him for his gentle heart, and soon they were married.
Yohyo and Otsu were happy together, although Yohyo earned only a little money and they were very poor. One night, just before New Year’ Eve, they were sitting together as usual, when Otsu noticed that her husband was worrying about something.
“My dear husband,” she said. “What are you worrying about? Please tell me.”
“Well…” sighed Yohyo. “It is nearly New Year’ Eve, but I cannot make any preparation for the feast because I have no money. I have not even enough money to buy rice and cakes. How I wish I had some money…”
Otsu listened to him silently.
“Yohyo, I will weave for you,” she said. “You can take the cloth that I weave5 and sell it at the market to earn some money.”
“But, please do not look into the other room, while I am working, promise me that you will not look in?”
Yohyo promised, and Otsu went into the other room and began to weave some cloth. She was working for hours ang Yohyo get tired of waiting, but he was patient. At last Otsu came out with a piece of beautiful cloth in her hands. It was the most beautiful cloth that Yohyo had ever seen.
The next morning he set off to the market in the town, and sold the piece of cloth for a lot of maney. Yohyo had never had so much money in his life. He was very excited and he bought many things with it. Soon, in his excitement, he had spent all the money, so he went home and asked Otsu to weave another piece of cloth. So greedy did he become, that he did not notice that the more she worked, the thinner Otsu became. However, as she loved Yoho very much, she wove new cloth for him every time he asked for it.
One day Yohyo asked for some cloth once again, and Otsu said, as usual, “I will weave for you but remember your promise-don’t look into the other room while I am working.”
Yohyo promised and sat down to wait but he soon got tierd of waiting for her. He could hear the sound of weaving, and he began to ask himself why he could not look in at Otsu, while she was working. Once he began to have doubts he could not stop himself from looking in.
He thought, “Otsu won’t be angry with me if I look in only for a moment.”
Finally, he could wait no longer. He crept to the entrance of the other room and looked in. Otsu was not there at all! Instead, he saw a very thin crane which wass pulling off its feathers and weaving them into the cloth. Yohyorecognised it as the very same crane whose life he saved so many months ago.
He crept away again and sat thinking quietly. He felt very anxious-what would Otsu do, now that he knew her secret?
At last the sound of weaving stopped, and Otsu came out of the roomwith two pieces of cloth in her hands.
“Yohyo,” she said, sadly. “You have broken your promise to me. Now that you know that I am a crane, I cannot stay here any longer. Take these pieces of cloth, sell one, and keep the other. Perhaps it will remind you of me.”
“Please Otsu, don’t leave me,” cried Yohyo. “How can I manage to live without you? I love you!”
But Otsu only smiled gently and shook her head.
“No, Yohyo,” she said.”I came here to reply you for your kindness to me, and I stayed for love of your gentle heart. But since I have been weaving for you, you have changed and become greedy and hard.”

The 50-Percent Theory of Life

I believe in the 50-percent theory. Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they are worse. giant Inflatable Games I believe life is a pendulum swing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is, and that gives me the perspective to deal with the surprises of the future.
Let's benchmark the parameters: Yes, I will die. I've dealt with the deaths of both parents, a best friend, a beloved boss and cherished pets. Some of these deaths have been violent, before my eyes, or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at the bottom of the scale.
Then there are those high points: romance and marriage to the right person; having a child and doing those Dad things like coaching my son's baseball team, paddling around the creek in the boat while he's swimming with the dogs, discovering his compassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pile of Legos.
But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me to believe in the 50-percent theory.
One spring I planted corn too early in a bottomland so flood-prone that neighbors laughed. I felt chagrined at the wasted effort. Summer turned brutal -- the worst heat wave and drought in my lifetime. The air-conditioner died, the well went dry, the marriage ended, the job lost, the money gone. I was living lyrics from a country tune -- music I loathed. Only a surging Kansas City Royals team, bound for their first World Series, buoyed my spirits.
Looking back on that horrible summer, I soon understood that all succeeding good things merely offset the bad. Worse than normal wouldn't last long. I am owed and savor the halcyon times. 　　She’s back again. The wrinkled hand, heavy with pleading, is now answering.
　　She drops four warm quarters into my palm and says, “Get yourselves a cup of coffee. Merry Christmas.”

I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am a Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother.
　　Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, house Holiday Inflatables of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I, too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife?
　　I would like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent, support myself, and if need be, support those dependent upon me, I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children. I want a wife to keep track of the children's doctor and dentist appointments. And to keep track of mine, too. I want a wife who will wash the children's clothes and keep them mended. I want a wife who is a good nurturant attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, takes them to the park, the zoo, etc. I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of cause, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wife's income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working.
　　I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me. I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced when need be, and who will see to it that my personal things are kept in their proper place so that I can find what I need the minute I need it. I want a wife who cooks the meals, a wife who is a good cook. I want a wife who will plan the menus, do the necessary grocery shopping, prepare the meals, serve them pleasantly, and then do the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school. I want a wife to go along when our family takes a vacation so that somesone can aomtinue to care for me and my children when I need a rest and change of scene.
　　I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife's duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in my course of studies. And I want a wife who type my papers for me when I have written them.
　　I want a wife who will take care of the details of my social life. When my wife and I are invited out by my friends, I want a wife who will take care of the babysitting arrangements. When I meet people at school that I like who will have the house clean, will prepare a special meal, serve it to me and my friends, and not interrupt when I talk about things that interest me and my friends. I want a wife who will have arranged that the children are fed and ready for bed before my guests arrive so that the children do not bother us. I want a wife who takes care of the needs of my guests so that they feel comfortable, who makes sure that they have an sahtray, that they are offered a second helping of the food, that their wine glasses are replenished when necessary, that their coffee is served to them as they like it. And I want a wife who knows that sometimes I need a night out by myself.
　　I want a wife who is sensitive to my sexual needs, a wife who makes love passionately and eagerly when I feel like it, a wife who makes sure that I am satisfied. And, of course, I want a wife who will not demand sexual attention when I am not in the mood for it. I want a wife who assumes the complete responsibility for birth control, because I do not want more children. I want a wife who will remain sexually faithful to me so that I do not have to clutter up my intellectual life with jealousies. And I want a wife who understands that my sexual needs may entail more than strict adherence to monogamy. I must, after all, be able to relate to people as fully as possible.
　　If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I have the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life; my wife will take the children and be solely responsible for them so that I am left free.

“I thought drugs were an escape.”

I needed to relieve my pain, and I thought drugs were the answer. I found that smoking weed3 made me feel secure and loved, but when the high4 wore off5, I felt even more empty, lost and alone. I thought the solution was to do more drugs, so I started using harder drugs like cocaine and Ecstasy6.
　　One night, I was smoking pot7 at my boyfriend's house. We had a fight and I stormed out and drove off. That's the last thing I remember. When I regained consciousness8, there were paramedics9 over me and lights flashing. I'd smashed into a telephone pole. I suffered shock and a concussion10, but my doctors said I was lucky to be alive—the crash could've killed me.
　　The crash cost me nearly $10000! But I got a second chance at life. I quit drugs, and I look forward to my future—because now I have a future.”
FACT: “Life's tough enough without a drug addiction,” says Howard Simon, spokesman for Partnership for a Drug-Free America. “Drugs just add more problems to the pile.”
“I didn't think drugs were a big deal.”
　　“My mom started abusing drugs when I was in fourth grade, so when a friend offered me weed in seventh grade, it didn't seem wrong to try it. Pot made me feel distant from my misery at home, and I started smoking and drinking on a daily basis. Then my mother left. It broke my heart—I felt like she chose drugs over me. But that didn't make me stop using them. I relied on weed to handle my pain and anger.
　　I moved in with my dad, but he drank a lot and we argued. I'd avoid going home, staying out with friends instead, drinking and getting high. Before, I only smoked for fun, but now I depended on it to help me through each day.
　　When I turned 18, I hopped a bus to California to try to start my life over. But I felt isolated there. I was smoking weed every day. Getting high was all I had, and it scared me. I realized I was just running from my problems. I called my dad and told him I wanted to come home.
　　I can happily say I've been off drugs for nearly a year now. My dad has also been sober for several months, and it's a lot easier for us to get along now that drugs aren't in the way. I've made new friends, too—my best friend is a girl from high school who didn't do drugs or drink. I still don't see my mom much, and I don't know if we'll ever be close again. All I know is that I don't want to waste my life getting high like she did. I'll never go back to the person I was—I would rather be the girl I always dreamed I could be!”
FACT: “Nobody knows how drug use is going to affect them,” Simon says. “You're playing Russian roulette11. Once you start, you can't be sure you'll walk away.”
“I did drugs so I would fit in.”
　　“I started hanging with a crowd that was into drugs. I wasn't into that stuff, but I didn't have anyone else to hang out with, so I started smoking pot to fit in. My parents found out, and my mom started crying. I realized I wasn't just hurting myself, I was hurting the people who loved me.”
“I thought some drugs were harmless.”
　　“I started smoking weed when I was in 6th grade. It seemed like a harmless drug. I was wrong—I've been smoking weed for three years now, and I've ditched all my old friends and probably blown a thousand dollars on pot. The short buzz12 just isn't worth it.”
FACT: “Sure, marijuana13 is safer—like jumping from the fifth floor is safer than jumping from the eighth floor,” Simon says. “It's still a dangerous drug.”
“I wanted to rebel.”
　　“I tried marijuana because it gave me a sense of rebellion. I didn't like being told what to do, so smoking weed made me feel defiant14. But I realized people expect teens to try drugs, and by smoking pot, I was just conforming to their expectations. It's dumb to think that doing drugs will somehow make you different or unique.”
FACT: “Yes, you're making a statement—you're saying, "I'm willing to risk becoming a drug addict,” Simon says. “Really, how does that sound?”

Chester was my window on the mysterious bond between canines and humans.
The way I see it dogs had this big meeting. Oh maybe 20,000 years ago. A huge meeting—an international convention with delegates from everywhere. And that's when they decided that humans were the up and coming species and dogs were going to throw their lot in with them. The decision was obviously not unanimous. The wolves and dingoes walked out in protest.
Cats had an even more negative reaction. When they heard the news they called their own meeting—in Paris of course—to denounce canine subservience to the human hyperpower.Their manifesto—La Condition Féline—can still be found in provincial bookstores.　
Cats, it must be said, have not done badly. Using guile and seduction they managed to get humans to feed them thus preserving their superciliousness without going hungry. A neat trick. Dogs being guileless signed and delivered. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
I must admit that I've been slow to warm to dogs. I grew up in a non-pet friendly home. Dogs do not figure prominently in Jewish immigrant households. My father was not very high on pets. He wasn't hostile. He just saw them as superfluous an encumbrance. When the Cossacks are chasing you around Europe you need to travel light.This by the way is why Europe produced far more Jewish violinists than pianists. Try packing a piano.　
My parents did allow a hint of zoological indulgence. I had a pet turtle. My brother had a parakeet. Both came to unfortunate ends. My turtle fell behind a radiator and was not discovered until too late. And the parakeet God bless him flew out a window once never to be seen again. After such displays of stewardship we dared not ask for a dog.
My introduction to the wonder of dogs came from my wife Robyn. She's Australian. And Australia as lovingly recounted in Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country has the craziest wildest deadliest meanest animals on the planet. In a place where every spider and squid can take you down faster than a sucker punched boxer you cherish niceness in the animal kingdom. And they don't come nicer than dogs.
Robyn started us off slowly. She got us a Border collie Hugo when our son was about six. She knew that would appeal to me because the Border collie is the smartest species on the planet. Hugo could one play outfield in our backyard baseball games, two do flawless front door sentry duty and three play psychic weatherman announcing with a wail every coming thunderstorm.
When our son Daniel turned ten he wanted a dog of his own. I was against it using arguments borrowed from seminars on nuclear nonproliferation. It was hopeless. One giant "Please Dad" and I caved completely. Robyn went out to Winchester Virginia found a litter of black Labs and brought home Chester.
Chester is what psychiatrists mean when they talk about unconditional love. Unbridled is more like it. Come into our house and he was so happy to see you he would knock you over.Deliverymen learned to leave things at the front door.　
In some respects—Ph.D. potential for example—I don't make any great claims for Chester. When I would arrive home I fully expected to find Hugo reading the newspaper. Not Chester. Chester would try to make his way through a narrow sliding door find himself stuck halfway and then look at me with total and quite genuine puzzlement.I don't think he ever got to understand that the rear part of him was actually attached to the front.
But it was Chester who dispensed affection as unreflectively as he breathed who got me thinking about this long ago pact between humans and dogs. Cat lovers and the pet averse will just roll their eyes at such dogophilia.I can't help it. Chester was always at your foot or your hand waiting to be petted and stroked played with and talked to. His beautiful blocky head his wonderful overgrown puppy's body his baritone bark filled every corner of house and heart.
Then last month at the tender age of eight he died quite suddenly. The long slobbering slothful decline we had been looking forward to was not to be. It's a sin around here to not thoroughly enjoy every moment of every golden day. It's embarrassing to answer, "Did you get out and enjoy the sunshine this weekend?" with "No, I stayed inside." Co-workers frown and exchange suspicious looks; manufacturer Inflatable Bounce apparently I'm one of those rain-loving slugs. I tried lying, but my pale complexion gave me away.
Another mark in rain's favor is that my body doesn't betray me when it's cold and damp outside. Throughout the winter, people wear several layers, with perhaps several extra pounds here and there. In June I dig out my shorts to discover my thighs resemble cottage cheese. I dread buying a swimsuit, as consecutive horror and humiliation make me cringe in the dressing room.
Even my tastebuds prefer the rain. When it storms outside, it's time for steamy hot chocolate or even a soothing toddy. People devour hot, hearty meals, with lots of potatoes and savory sauces. This type of eating evaporates when the sun comes out; suddenly everyone offers salads and ice water and expects it to be satisfying.
It's time to publicly acknowledge that I love the rain, how it transforms my house into a cozy caves where I can spend the afternoon cooking and dreaming. It seems nobody else will admit to a love affair with the rain, nobody else will groan when it's hot outside and join me in a rain dance.
When the sun comes out I do greet it with a smile, slipping sunglasses to my purse and pulling a tank top out of my closet. Yet my comfortable sweaters and warm slippers beckon, making me wish for another wet, chilly afternoon. When the rain returns, I will grin even more. Am I the only one?

My Miraculous Family

I never considered myself unique, cheap Castle Bounce House but people are constantly telling me, "you are a miracle." To me, I was just an ordinary "guy" with realistic goals and big dreams. I was a 19-year-old student at the University of Texas and well on my way toward fulfilling my "big dream" of one day becoming an 1)orthopedic surgeon.
On the night of February 17, 1981 I was studying for an 2)Organic Chemistry test at the library with Sharon, my girlfriend of three years. Sharon had asked me to drive her back to her dormitory as it was getting quite late. We got into my car, not realizing that just getting into a car would never quite be the same for me again. I quickly noticed that my gas 3)gauge was registered on empty so I pulled into a nearby convenience store to buy $2.00 worth of gas. "I'll be back in two minutes," I yelled at Sharon as I closed the door. But instead, those two minutes changed my life forever.
Entering the convenience store was like entering the 4)twilight zone. On the outside I was a healthy, athletic, pre-med student, but on the inside I was just another statistic of a violent crime. I thought I was entering an empty store, but suddenly I realized it was not empty at all. Three robbers were in the process of committing a robbery and my entrance into the store caught them by surprise. One of the criminals immediately 5)shoved a .38 6)caliber handgun to my head, ordered me to the cooler, pushed me down on the floor, and pumped a bullet into the back of my head - execution style. He obviously thought I was dead because he did not shoot me again. The 7) trio of thieves finished robbing the store and left calmly.
Meanwhile, Sharon wondered why I had not returned. After seeing the three men leave the store she really began to worry as I was the last person she saw entering the store. She quickly went inside to look for me, but saw no one-only an almost empty cash register containing one check and several pennies. Quickly she ran down each aisle shouting, "Mike, Mike!"
Just then the 8) attendant appeared from the back of the store shouting, "Lady, get down on the floor. I've just been robbed and shot at!"
Sharon quickly dropped to the floor screaming, "Have you seen my boyfriend? He has 9)auburn hair." The man did not reply but went back to the cooler where he found me choking on my vomit. The attendant quickly cleaned my mouth and then called for the police and an ambulance.
Sharon was in shock. She was beginning to understand that I was hurt, but she could not begin to comprehend or imagine the severity of my injury.
When the police arrived they immediately called the 10)homicide division as they did not think I would survive and the 11)paramedic reported that she had never seen a person so severely wounded survive. At 1:30 a.m. my parents who lived in Houston, were awakened by a telephone call from Brackenridge Hospital advising them to come to Austin as soon as possible for they feared I would not make it through the night.
But I did make it through the night and early in the morning the 12)neurosurgeon decided to operate. However, he quickly informed my family and Sharon that my chances of surviving the surgery were only 40/60. If this were not bad enough, the neurosurgeon further shocked my family by telling them what life would be like for me if I 13)beat the odds and survived. He said I probably would never walk, talk, or be able to understand even simple commands.
My family was hoping and praying to hear even the slightest bit of encouragement from that doctor. Instead, his pessimistic words gave my family no reason to believe that I would ever again be a productive member of society. But once again I beat the odds and survived the three and a half hours of surgery.
Granted, I still could not talk, my entire right side was paralyzed and many people thought I could not understand, but at least I was stable. After one week in a private room the doctors felt I had improved enough to be transferred by jet ambulance to Del Oro 14)Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston.
My 15)hallucinations, coupled with my physical problems, made my 16)prognosis still very bleak. However, as time passed my mind began to clear and approximately six weeks later my right leg began to move ever so slightly. Within seven weeks my right arm slowly began to move and at eight weeks I uttered my first few words.
My speech was extremely difficult and slow in the beginning, but at least it was a beginning. I was starting to look forward to each new day to see how far I would progress. But just as I thought my life was finally looking brighter I was tested by the hospital europsychologist. She explained to me that judging from my test results she believed that I should not focus on returning to college but that it would be better to set more "realistic goals."
Upon hearing her evaluation I became furious for I thought, "Who is she to tell me what I can or cannot do. She does not even know me. I am a very determined and stubborn person!" I believe it was at that very moment that I decided I would somehow, someday return to college.
It took me a long time and a lot of hard work but I finally returned to the University of Texas in the fall of 1983 - a year and a half after almost dying. The next few years in Austin were very difficult for me, but I truly believe that in order to see beauty in life you have to experience some unpleasantness. Maybe I have experienced too much unpleasantness, but I believe in living each day to the fullest, and doing the very best I can.
And each new day was very busy and very full, for besides attending classes at the University I underwent therapy three to five days each week at Brackenridge Hospital. If this were not enough I flew to Houston every other weekend to work with Tom Williams, a trainer and executive who had worked for many colleges and professional teams and also had helped many injured athletes, such as Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson. Through Tom I learned: "Nothing is impossible and never, never give up or quit."
Early, during my therapy, my father kept repeating to me one of his favorite sayings. I have repeated it almost every day since being hurt: "Mile by mile it's a trial; yard by yard it's hard; but inch by inch it's a cinch."
I thought of those words, and I thought of Tom, my family and Sharon who believed so strongly in me as I climbed the steps to receive my diploma from the Dean of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas on that bright sunny afternoon in June of 1986. Excitement and pride filled my heart as I heard the dean announce that I had graduated with "highest honors", been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and been chosen as one of 12 Dean's Distinguished Graduates out of 1600 in the College of Liberal Arts.
The overwhelming emotions and feelings that I experienced at that very moment, when most of the audience gave me a standing 17)ovation, I felt would never again be matched in my life-not even when I graduated with a masters degree in social work and not even when I became employed full time at the Texas Pain and Stress Center. But I was wrong!
On May 24, 1987, I realized that nothing could ever match the joy I felt as Sharon and I were married. Sharon, my high school sweetheart of nine years, had always stood by me, through good and bad times. To me, Sharon is my miracle, my diamond in a world filled with problems, hurt, and pain. It was Sharon who dropped out of school when I was hurt so that she could constantly be at my side. She never wavered or gave up on me.
It was her faith and love that pulled me through so many dark days. While other nineteen year old girls were going to parties and enjoying life, Sharon devoted her life to my recovery. That, to me, is the true definition of love.
After our beautiful wedding I continued working part time at the Pain Center and completed my work for a masters degree. yard Trackless Trains We were extremely happy, but even happier when we learned Sharon was pregnant.
On July 11, 1990 at 12:15 a.m. Sharon woke me with the news: "We need to go to the hospital… my water just broke." I couldn't help but think how ironic it was that my life almost ended in a convenience store and now on the date "7-11" we were about to bring a new life into this world. This time it was my turn to help Sharon as she had helped me over those past years.

God & Father

When the good Lord was creating fathers, He started with a tall frame. And a female angel nearby said, "What kind of father is that? air blown Abominable Snowman If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping."
And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?"
And when God made a father' hands, they were large and sinewy.
And the angel shook her head sadly and said, "Do You know what You're doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats."
God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day, and get small enough to cup a child's face."
Then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders.
The angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do You realize You just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?"
God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."

God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer. "That' not fair. Do You honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?"
And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to "ride a horse to Banbury Cross" or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill."
God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that see everything, but remain calm and tolerant.
Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the angel and said, "Now are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?"
And the angel shutteth up!

The Eyes of TEX

Tex，the six－year－old cattle dog the Seals had raised from a puppy，was unusually amiable for a blue－heeler，a breed establish ed by ranchers in Australia．So，although he already shared his doghouse with a yellow cat，soon Tex happily moved over and made room for the new puppy the Seals called Heinz．
Not long before Heinz showed up，the Seals had noticed that Tex appeared to be losing his eyesight．Their veterinarian said he thought the dog had cataracts that might be surgically6) removed．But when they brought Tex to a specialist in Dallas，he determined that the dog’s poor eyesight was only partially due to cataracts．He made an appointment for Tex at the local college’s veterinary laboratory．Doctors there determined that Tex was already blind．They explained that no medical or surgical procedure could have halted or delayed Tex’s progressive loss of vision．
As they talked on their way home，the Seals realized that over the last few months，they had watched Tex cope with his blindness．Now they understood why Tex sometimes missed a gate opening or bumped his nose on the chain link fence．And why he usually stayed on the gravel walkways traveling to and from the house．If he wandered off，he quartered back and forth until he was on the gravel again．
While the couple had been preoccupied with Tex’ s troubles，Heinz had grown plump and frisky，and her dark brown－and－black coat glowed with health．
It was soon obvious that the little German shepherd crossbreed would be a large dog――too large to continue sharing a doghouse with Tex and the yellow cat．One weekend，the Seals built another doghouse next to the on e the dogs had shared．
It was then they recognized that what they had assumed was puppy playfulness――Heinz’s pushing and tugging at Tex while romping with him――actually had a purpose．Without any training or coaching，Heinz had become Tex’s“seeing eye”dog．
Each evening when the dogs settled in for the night，Heinz gently took Tex’s nose in her mouth and led him into his house．In the morning，she got him up and guided him out of the house again．When the two dogs approached a gate，Heinz used her shoulder to guide Tex through．When they ran along the fence surrounding their pen，Heinz placed herself between Tex and the wire．
“On sunny days，Tex sleeps stretched out on the driveway asphalt7)，”says Jeffrey．“If a car approaches，Heinz will nudge him awake and guide him out of danger．Any number of times we‘ve seen Heinz push Tex aside to get him out of the horses’ way．What we didn’ t understand at first was how the two could run side by side，dashing full speed across the pasture．Then one day，the dogs accompanied me while I exercised my horse，and I heard Heinz‘talking’――she was making a series of soft grunts to keep Tex on course beside her．”

Reflecting on Anger
Another way of dealing with anger is to reflect on its results.
We know very well that when we are angry, we do not see the truth clearly. As a result, we may commit many unwholesome actions.
Our future life is determined by our intentional actions today, just as our present life is heir to our previous intentional behavior. Intentional actions committed under the influence of anger cannot lead to a happy future.
A Fresh Start Now
The greatest power you possess for succeeding in life is your understanding that life gives you a fresh start any moment you choose to start fresh.
You've only to test the truth of this fact about the newness of life to discover the incredible freedom that waits for you just behind it.
Nothing that stood in your way even a heartbeat before stands there now in the same way. It's all new, even if you can't as yet see it that way.
Finding Spiritual Guidance
Look for spiritual guidance everywhere and at any time... Spiritual guidance is not restricted to one area, or one particular day, or one particular time of the day.
While you may be more open to receiving your guidance in the quiet hours of the early morning, or the late night, your spiritual guidance is always present. It is present in books that you 'happen' to come across, articles you are attracted to reading, things you hear that when looked at from that perspective apply to your situation.
Perhaps if we expected to receive spiritual guidance at each and every moment of our lives instead of simply in church on Sunday, or when we sit quietly in meditation, we would receive many more messages throughout the day.
Emotions Have an Effect!
Every emotion that surges or trickles through you causes a physical reaction somewhere in the body. A minor upset may take a couple of days to register as a headache or backache; a more vehement explosion of anger or hatred directed at someone could result in a terrible case of ulcers or colitis, because that emotion is pounding your body.
But just as negative emotions have a negative effect on the body, so too do positive emotions have a positive effect.
We are all teachers and students
We are all teachers and students. You learn (hopefully) from the people in your life, and they have the opportunity to learn from you as well.
We are all 'in the same boat' and if we start learning from each other and sharing what we have learned with others, perhaps we can get to where we're going faster.
